The effects of having a Sacrificial Mother - Table Talk
By: Deahvionne Moore
In the book, Morrison talks about Sula as a growing and evolving woman. Sula was brought up by
a mother who only loved her, she didn’t like her. She was also raised in a house with a
grandmother who did what needed to be done to raise her children, which meant being
emotionally absent. I will be creating a community event that shows the long-term effects of
children who were raised by an emotionally absent/sacrificing mother. Not being emotionally
connected to someone who is supposed to be there for you and not just provide for you can cause
lots of problems, and I want people to know and understand that. This event will provide the
attendees with the tools and resources they will need to identify if they have a sacrificial mother
and to help them navigate through the situation and become better people in the end. I feel that
this specific age group needs to hear about this topic because they are at the age where things are
starting to become hard. They are navigating through the steps of becoming an adult, going to
college, and officially being out in the world. You can’t survive in the real world if you don’t have a
good, solid foundation to stand on. So this event will help them get through the problems they
have faced from having a sacrificial mother.
