Love through the looking Prism explores the different outlooks of what proper loves looks like with Love Ethics that Bell Hook's discuss in Salvation. I choose to explore songs that talk about: Familial Love, Spiritual Love, and Romantic Love.
Spiritual Love songs:
1. I need thee- Annie Sherwood and Robert Lowery
2. Endow me- James Moore
3. Long as I got king Jesus- Vickie Winans
In Salvation, bell hooks first establishes that love ethics is first learned from the Bible, and the spiritual aspect sets a firm foundation for what proper love ethics looks like by honoring God and God loving you despite different trials and tribulations that happen in life and even between you and God. I firstly chose "I Need Thee" because it's an old hymn that was passed down through generations in the Black community, and it points out that they need God. It's not a want or a desire, but to accurately live a righteous and upright walk and show love to others, they need Jesus. I correlate this with love ethics because you need people in your life. "Endow Me" by James Moore adds to love ethics because he also talks about how he needs God to talk right, live right, and stay right. The last song in this portion was chosen because she shows how people will betray and hurt you. However, when you have spiritual love as your foundation, it will guide you and help you know how to remain in who you are. "Long as I Got King Jesus" means that when you are lied on or betrayed— because people will hurt you—Jesus will help you get through that time and respond back in a positive way with love.
Self Love:
4. I don't need you anymore-Laila
5. Blackberry-- Laila
6. Pedigree- Ari Lennox
Love starts from within, so once the foundation is established from spiritual love, it's now time to heal or work on loving yourself first. IDONTNEEDUANYMORE by Laila clearly defines how she does not need an individual in her life to show her half-effort. Since she is content with herself, she can truly stand alone. In Blackberry, Laila clearly defines in the song that she does not know what she wants in life. However, she does know that she wants the guy, and she wants him to do certain acts to show her that he actually cares and loves her. But she also defines that she would rather be alone if he does not want to show her how she wants to be treated, which is self-love, because she is choosing herself over a man even though she clearly has feelings for the guy she is writing about.
Romantic Love:
7. Young Love- Cleo Sol
8. I want you around- Snoh Alegra
9.Whoa- Snoh Alegra
10. Intro ( End of World)- Ariana Grande
11. Written all over your face- Rude boys
Romantic love songs all share a similar type of feel when it comes to how to show it through healthy and proper love ethics. All these songs express their infatuation with their significant other and how the other person shows it with intensity. Also, in all of the songs, sexual desires are not much talked about or even concerned with; instead, they are more focused on how the person feels about them. In Salvation, hooks clearly defines that erotic love goes beyond just the sexual; it is also spiritual and emotional. In all of these songs, they are using their different emotions to talk about love.
Familial Love:
1. Promises - Cleo Sol
2. Sunshine- Cleo Sol
Both of these songs were on her album called Mother. The first song, Promises, is actually her talking about her experience with her mother. In this song, you can tell that there was some trauma that happened from how her mother treated her. However, in the song she shares that even though her mother is unstable, she herself remains stable and she will be there. In the song, she also talks about her hurt from the inconsistency and her mother’s hypocrisy. I think this shows proper love ethics in an unethical situation because she is still
choosing to remain loving in an unloving situation and not basing her love ethics on the other person, but she is choosing to use love ethics with her mother while still healing from the pain. Sunshine talks about her kids. She explains that in this world her kids are her pride and joy and they are a gift to her and not a burden. She feels love and wants to properly love them because they are her sunshine.
