Love & Oppression- Visual
For this visual project, I chose to do the topic Love & Oppression, similar to some
of the themes in bell hooks’ Salvation. I wanted to go more in depth and show
how love and oppression could be viewed, especially in the black perspective.
Black people are often the most marginalized group in America, and face
oppression like no other, especially around slavery time and even still today due
to stereotypes and just pure racism. bell hooks mentioned in Salvation that one
way we could all come together as a community is if we reach some form of love
ethic. I agree with that statement, I believe that if we truly come together and love
one another, that we can reach an ultimate love ethic. That is if everyone
collectively agreed on doing so, but we know there will surprisingly be some
people who do not want to do such a thing because of possible internalized
racism.
All in all, black people are placed in a very vulnerable space due to all of the
discrimination they face. Which is why I chose to do a digital collage; at the top is
the “Oppression”side, showcasing us still coming together to fight for one another
in a time of need (i.e. Black Panther Party, protests, a quote dedicated to the
oppression of black people, as well as a picture from the movie Diary of a Mad
Black Woman (although Helen was in a both physically and emotionally abusive
relationship, I personally feel like she acted accordingly and still found love
regardless), etc.). Showing that we are also silenced by white people, how black
women were showcased during slavery, the struggles of being a black single
mother, etc. At the bottom, it shows the “Love” aspect, coming to the conclusion
that even through everything we have faced, we still chose to love one another.
Examples include MLK and his wife, Loretta, President Obama and First-Lady
Michelle; showing that even black historical figures found a way to love each
other through the hardships of simply being black in America. I just wanted to
show that there is still love and light at the end of the tunnel for us, and that we
should love one another, especially in times like these. That’s when we need each
other the most, after all.
